I am currently researching the Hargadon family tree and am trying to trace family members who emigrated to the New Jersey in the late 1800s. I am a greatgrand daughter of Michael Hargadon and Bridget McEvoy and grand daughter of James Hargadon and Mary Kerins. The Hargadon family home was in Springfield Ballisodare. I am second cousin of Kate Hargadon from Carnamadda, Ballisodare who perished on the Titanic.
More About Me:
I am 53 years old and live in Ballisodare. I have 2 children James John Clancy age 22 and Hazel Mary Clancy age 20. I had an uncle James S Hargadon who died in NJ in 1942 and is buried there. The main first names in the family are John, James, Bernard and Michael on the male side and Kate and Mary Anne on the female line. If anyone has any imformation about I would love to hear from you.
OK, we're going to love talking, I think! My g-grandfather John came over in 1890 to New York. I've got to find my notes but as I recall he came from a farm where two Hargadon brothers shared the land. The incredible commonality of the name Bernard in the US Hargadons suggests that there is some strong tie to several of the family lines here.
I'll get out the family chart I did that tells me more about the brothers who shared the farm, and see if we can't make a connection.
By the way, I was the amateur researcher who discovered years ago that all of the Titanic records about Kate Hargadon were wrong. From my blog: "Some years ago I received an email from a woman asking if I had ever heard of a "Kate Hargadon" (my same last name), who had been the traveling companion of her grandmother on the Titanic. This intrigued me, so I searched the web to find that all the Titanic websites listed a young woman age 17, from Ballysodare, Co Sligo, Ireland, whose name was spelled "Kate Hagardon." This young woman boarded the Titanic at Queenstown and, sadly, died in the sinking of the ship. Because all of the members of the "Hargadon" family trace back to County Sligo in Ireland, it seemed possible to me that "Hagardon" was actually mis-transcribed from "Hargadon." I wrote the Irish Titanic Historical Society, who had someone look up the original passenger manifest, and found that "Kate Hargardon" was in fact "Kate Hargadon." They in turn informed all of the Titanic historical sites, and for many years every mention of "Kate Hargadon" carried a footnote acknowledging me as the "historian" who had discovered this."
Hi Geraldine. WOW this is great to hear about 'our' connection. The Scotish side of the family seems very strong, with the first Hargadons coming from Ireland over the water to Scotland. As mentioned my dad was James (born 1928 in Uphall, Edinburgh, my brother is Michael, sister Barbara. Hargadon aunties were Mary, Barbara, Ellen, Josephine, Margaret. My eldest, although not a Hargadon, is also called James. So the first names are still running through the family.
Hi Geraldine. This is amazing news. I know nothing of my family history beyond my Dad. I must tell my siblings. Anymore info please keep me informed. I will see what else i can find out my end.
Hi Geraldine. This is getting very interesting. I will ring my auntie Barbara tonight to get the full details of her parents so we can really get this confirmed or not. Will get back to you as soon as. Thanks Lisa
Hi Geraldine. Got everything confirmed from my Auntie (Hargadon). I am going to chart all the ties and email you via your listed email address if thats ok. My g grandfather was Bernard Hargadon (and brother to your grandfather), grandfather was James married to Barbara, brother of John - both brothers went to Uphall at the same time.........
Geraldine, I was born beside Lough Arrow near Riverstown. We are in this general area since the late 1800's,but according to family history my Gt Gt Grandfather Owen was born in or near Aughamore near Lough Gill. Looking at the 1824 Tithes Applotment there was an Owen in Aughamore as well as in other townlands in the general are.
He also had brothers Peter John and Thomas and sons Thomas John,Bernard Patrick and Peter. The Bernards appear in all lines of the family and I am Bernard but know as Brian.
I have not been able to make a connection with any other Hargadon's in Slgo.
Regards, Brian
